Yan-Yu Lu, a second-year student of the Department of Information Communication, pointed out that a YOLO (You Only Look Once) neural network is used by the “AI-based traffic signal control system” which is coupled with a transfer learning vehicle identification system. Yan-Yu Lu also said that an appropriate number of seconds for traffic lights is allocated by the system based on the real-time traffic flow, and the green light will not be turned on when no car passes. Furthermore, the number of seconds for the green light is determined by the traffic flow to improve the traffic smoothness. Yan-Yu Lu said that the reason why she can win the 2020 InnoServe Awards is that she learned the courses “Digital Image Design” and “Deep Learning and Applications” offered by the master’s program of the Dept. of Information Communication, when she was in the first and second undergraduate years. Integrated in these two courses are programming, AI technology, audio and video editing, etc. A chair professor of the College of Information and Electrical Engineering at AU, Ching-Hsien Hsu, said that AU supports funding and resources to set up an elite programming class by the college in 2020 to recruit students who are interested in programming, and invite foreign experts to guide the students. Prof. Hsu is very happy to have results in the first year, and he believes that more students will win prizes in domestic and foreign competitions in the future. A professor of the Department of Information Communication at AU, Ching-Ta Lu, said that the courses of the department include two major themes, namely, programming and film and television. Yan-Yu Lu is responsible for applying programming and deep learning techniques to develop the proposed AI-based traffic signal control system; and Bo-Yan Huang, a freshman student of the Department of Information Communication, is responsible for applying film and television media techniques to complete the thematic marketing videos. What they have done is a combination of AI technology and communication. Prof. Lu also said that the combined characteristics of the two research directions in the department is the main reason to win the award.
