Asia University Ranked 805 in World University Rankings and Top 10 Universities in Taiwan

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021 released the names of the world’s top universities on 2 September 2020. Asia University makes great progress this year as it is ranked 805 in the world’s universities. The ranking also highlights Asia University as No. 10 in all public and private Taiwan universities, No. 3 in all private universities, and No.1 in all non-medical universities. Founded in 2000, Asia University has gained its fame as one of the most outstanding, vigorous and young universities among its academic communities and educational circles around the world.

The (THE) World University Rankings measures a university’s performance across fives metrics: teaching, research, research citations, industry income and international outlook. Asia University progressively distinguishes itself in these five categories, among which the realms of international outlook and research citations have demonstrated an average of 20% improvement than those of the last year. Prof. Mei-chin Yin, Dean of the Division of Research and Development, explains that more than 1,500 universities across 93 countries and regions are included in this world’s largest and most influential university rankings, based upon 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators.  There are 18 Taiwan universities appearing on the top 1000 list in this world university rankings. Dr. Jeffrey J. P. Tsai, president of Asia University, says that since the establishment of Asia University Hospital in 2015, faculty members from College of Medical and Health Sciences and College of Information and Electronic Engineering have worked in tandem with the doctors of various specialties from the university hospital, and they have embarked on joint ventures and explored into the field of AI medical researches. So far some promising results are emerging as they are shown in the AI application of precision medicine. For example, the automatic Image Interpretation System is used by nephrologists to conduct X-ray check on lung disease; doctors can now save the newborns from agonal respiration with the AI-assisted analysis of the abnormal fetal heart beats and uterus contraction; the combined use of AI and IoT can facilitate the facial recognition system even if the masks are worn. By the way, the university’s 3D Printing Center has conducted many projects and won National Innovation Award for three consecutive years. The above examples further reveal how the university has endeavored to venture into the cutting edge of the technological development and application which in a way points to some new directions and mappings for future higher education.

Asia University’s outstanding performance in world university rankings these years has also highlighted the importance of global mobility and further motivated students to study abroad for international exchange and internship.  President Jeffrey J. P. Tsai reiterates that nine research center’s international academic cooperation with world-renowned universities helps create ample opportunities for students’ global mobility: for instance, Artificial Intelligence Center and Precision Medicine Center collaborate with Harvard University, University of Missouri and Kyoto University; 3D Printing Center works with Georgia Institute of Technology and Nanyang Technological University; Institute of Innovation and Circular Economy teams up with University of Michigan and University of Nottingham. Besides, there are now more than 700 international students studying for their BA, MA, and PhD degrees on our campus in this semester. The university offers 30 English-taught degree programs to accommodate themDr. Yinghuei Chen, Dean of the International College , mentions that to cope with the outbreak of COVID-19 and its impact upon higher education, the university makes efforts to initiate and promote a new “virtual exchange” program this semester.  The university offers 39 on-line courses for partner university students from Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, and India to take courses despite the temporary shutdowns of many international borders. Though students cannot come to Taiwan, the teaching and learning can carry on without interruption. Amazingly, over 530 international students have registered and studied on-line with us. For this year’s summer program, the university also adopts an on-line model, which surprisingly attracts 950 international students from Tulane University, National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, The University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), University of Airlangga, University of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta, Diponegoro University, Negeri Jakarta University, University of Hyderabad, University of Malaysia, Ajou University, Western Sydney University to study with us.

With the recent performance in world university rankings, Asia University is becoming a brand name which symbolizes quality teaching and research, and which is gradually turning itself into an international comprehensive university of academic dynamics and vitality.
